Queen Kaʻahumanu Historical Art Print
Mid Century Modern Rendition by: John Stout

This print is based on one of the most recognized early portraits of Queen Kaʻahumanu, created during the first half of the nineteenth century. The original image, titled Reine Cahoumanou, was published in Louis Choris’s illustrated volume, Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde (1822). Choris traveled with the Russian explorer Otto von Kotzebue in 1816 and sketched Hawaiian aliʻi and scenes from the islands, making this portrait one of the earliest known depictions of Kaʻahumanu. The attendant pictured beside her reflects her rank and court presence during this early post-Kamehameha era.

This modern rendition was created by John Stout of Moʻolelo Kūʻiʻo as part of a growing series of historically grounded art pieces. Each artwork blends mid century modern design with verified early Hawaiian historical sources. Every print includes a scannable QR code that links to the testimony, background, and primary source details connected to the artwork, allowing viewers to learn the history behind the image while enjoying its updated visual style.

These prints work well in homes, classrooms, libraries, and educational settings, serving both as decorative pieces and as tools for cultural learning and historical literacy.
