Moʻolelo Kūʻiʻo Can Cooler
Featuring Mission Log Records

This dual sided can cooler features our Moʻolelo Kūʻiʻo design and includes the historical account recorded by Sybil Bingham on June 24, 1820. In her journal, she described being welcomed aboard a vessel where, in her words, “He set upon the table decanters and glasses with wine and brandy to refresh us.” These early observations reflect the social customs and daily interactions that missionaries encountered among foreign residents in Hawaiʻi during the early nineteenth century.
Historical records also show that these interactions continued for years. Mission logs indicate that as late as 1827, the Honolulu station operated in effect a liquor supply for its members. According to the records from May 15, 1826, to May 2, 1827, Hiram Bingham personally purchased:

• 7 and a half gallons of wine
• 6 and three quarter gallons, one pint, and one bottle of rum
• 4 gallons of brandy
• 1 dozen bottles of porter
• 4 bottles of port

These details offer a clear view of everyday realities faced by the early mission and the world they navigated as they worked within the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Drink whatever the Holy Spirit leads you.
